Jordana Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH Chapter 1 - Chapter 5
Widowed Mrs. Frisby brought a surprise home for her four children, the eldest Teresa, Martin, Cynthia, and the youngest Timothy. The three eldest mice came to the table for the surprise (corn) but Timothy did not. Mrs. Frisby went to check on him. He had a high fever and felt dizzy every time he sat up. Teresa stayed home with Timothy while the rest of the mice went to get more corn. When they returned Teresa was crying, because Timothy was delirious. So Mrs. Frisby went to get medicine from Mr. Ages. She got the medicine and headed home. On her way Mr. Frisby saw a crow tangled in a holiday ribbon. The cat tried to get the crow but Mrs. Frisby saved him in the nick of time. The crow, Jeremy dropped Mrs. Frisby off a her house and she thanked him. Timothy drank the medicine and was better in three days. Although he was better, he was still weak and could not go for a long walk or in the cold for one month. Mrs. Frisby found out that moving day was soon, and Timothy couldn't leave the house.
This book is very good. The author is very clever and she thought of details that I wouldn't have thought of in a million years. I was nervous that Timothy might die! I'm glad he didn't!
I finished the Giver over the weekend and took the test on MONDAY.
The Meanest Doll in the World Chapters 2-4
Auntie Sarah, Tiffany, and Annabell decide to go to the attic to try to find a rare spider. They find the web, but Annabell ruins the find by falling onto it. When the dolls are finished looking for the spider, they go downstairs. Tiffany and Annabell jump into Nora's bookbag after a close call with Permanant Doll State (PDS). They are transported to Nora's school while inside the bookbag. They are very frightened when they get there (they've never been out of Nora and her family's house before!)
I like this book so far. I don't like how Annabell keeps messing up, though. I hope that when the end of the book comes, she's a little more careful about what she does! :)
Jordana Mrs Frisby and the rats of NIHM Chapters 5 - Chapter 15 ( All of the chapters are very short) For the week of 1/19/09 to 1/23/09
Jeremy takes Mrs frisby to see the owl. She asks him advice. Mrs. frisby wants to know what she should do because her son Timothy is sick and Moving Day is approaching. The owl advises her to go to the rats "den" in the rosebush. So the next day Mrs. Frisby goes. THe rosebush is very thorny and Mrs. Frisby finds away in. A mean RAT tells her to go away so she does. Then outside Mr. Ages comes by and he says he is late for a meeting; he brings Mrs. Frisby back in with him. Justin the kind rat is there and he knows Mrs. Frisby's husband so she is welcome. Then he leads he to the head mouse and he says he can help. The he tells her a lot about her husbands, and the RATS life that she didn't know of.
This is a very strange/clever book. The author literally thought of every thing. It was surprising that Mrs. Frisby didn't know a bout the connection between the RATS and her husband Jonathan. THis book is very good.
P.S. The RATs are in capitals because I want to emphasize that they are not mice.

FYI I had a great time at JrPYIC, but that story is for another day....
Back to "The Namesake": The main character, Gogol changes his name to Nikhil. He meets a girl named Maxine. Gogol stays at her parents' house because he doesn't have a place to stay. At some point, she and Gogol decide to go to New Hampshire. Then, Gogol hears his father is going to Cleveland for a business trip. They stop by to say goodbye and go to New Hampshire. At New Hampshire, Gogol is having a good time at her parents' summer home. In the middle of the night, he gets a call that his father is dead. He then goes to the hospital in Cleveland and his "parents'" house. This is where I left off.
This part wasn't as interesting as the first part until Gogol's father died. I like Jhumpa Lahiri's style of writing.
So far this book is about a presidential candidates daughter who is called up to the artic to analyze a meteor that was expected to have extraterrestrial life in it. She eventually discovers that it is a fake with a man named Micheal Tolland and another named Corky who is an astrophyscist. They discovered that the crust was made from putting in front of a rocket eingine, the fossils were prehistoric sea creatures, and the near middle nickel content was just a terrestial rock.
I really like this book. There is constant action, and every chapter ends with a cliffhanger.
So far Robert and Sophie have discovered that Sophie's grandfather was a part of the priory of sion, which formed the knights templar. They are in possesion of something that her grandpa left in a safe deposit box. It is a device that is cyndrilical and can only be opened with the documents inside intact by knowing the code. If you smash it you will smash the glass vial that the papyrus message was in. This would be bad becuase the glass tube was usually surrounded by vinegar, which dissolves papyrus.
I really like this book so far. I like how Dan Brown gets you thinking and trying to guess what will happen next. I think this one has less action then his other novel about Robert LAngdon though.
Jordana Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH Chapter 15 - Chapter 19 For the week of 1/26/09 - 1/30/09
Nicodiemus was in the middle of telling Mrs. Frisby about the RATS' lives before they moved to the rose bush in a farm. Nicodiemus was a young RAT a while he and all of the other mice were eating leftovers in a market place the were kidnapped. They were taken to a science lab, and every few weeks the scientists gave them injections. They were testing them and also teaching them to read. The RATS were trying to escape and they probably will escape soon.
This book is very clever. I hope Mrs. Frisby can save her house and her children. The story Nicodiemus is telling her is interesting and as an author I would never have thought to add this story in to a book!

Finally I'm almost done. In the part I read this week, Gogol had to stay with his mother and sister because his father had just died. However, after a few weeks, he had to go to New York back to work. His mother tells Gogol to call a family friend named Moushomi who is also Bengali. He really doesn't want to do this, but for his mother's sake, he reluctantly calls her. Surprisingly, they fall in love. That is where I stopped.
I'm not sure how I liked this part. I felt sad when Gogol's father died. I think it was sort of interesting.
